New criteria begins 1 July

The intended changes to the supervision criteria was an initiative led by a membership working party with very wide representation concerned about how many supervisors were not supervising using the Addiction Competencies Framework and were really unaccountable to the Association approving registration and renewal of that registration. Registration is based upon the Addiction Competencies Framework and upon supervisors’ opinion that the practitioner was continuing to demonstrate competence in those competencies. The role of supervisors is going to become increasingly important in both registration and renewal. Therefore, the Association needed to take a more interested role in the supervisors. By inviting supervisors to become accredited, which includes membership of dapaanz, brings them under the Code of Ethics, and the Addiction Competencies Framework. The Association is looking at an option to move its primary relationship from practitioners to supervisors which it would then support through such as regional support hubs.

The Association wants supervisors to be trained in supervision. This is not mandatory until 2015. The last thing we want is to lose good supervisors and a close watch will be kept on this possibility.

All supervisors to be accredited by dapaanz – simple application form, effectively grand-parenting scheme until end of 2014

Supervisors face one-off application fee, annual membership renewal, three year supervisor accreditation renewal

All renewals of registration will need sign-off from accredited supervisors

If your supervisor is not accredited, your renewal of registration will fail

Full details on website under Registration Criteria and also under Accredited Clinical Supervisor; enquiries to Supervision Criteria Team on (04) 499 30 83

The Association is also planning the development of supervision guidelines to reflect changing practices. This would be done in team with Matua Raki and Te Pou and members who are interested in contributing to this work. It is likely to start from the work done by Kina Trust on supervision which is the standard text

•	Looking to improve the system
•	Expect a simpler and easier framework for points
•	Several longer term options being considered: could do away with points altogether, could move to hours of CPD, could leave it to supervisors and their supervisees, could make longer periods for renewal, could award points for length of service, could award points for personal development, could offer something entirely different
•	You will get your chance to comment
