Registration Criteria

You competencies are recognised by becoming a registered addiction practitioner with dapaanz. Competency for registration is assessed according to the Addiction Intervention Competency Framework. All dapaanz members, regardless of status, are subject to the Code of Ethics.

Please note: All practitioners need to be provionally registered before applying for full registration

Provisional registration

Qualification requirements           
  • Your qualification must include a supervised and assessed clinical practicum of at least 120 hours
  • You will require an applied bachelor degree (or higher) in addictions, counselling, social work, nursing, medicine or Te Taketake Diploma in Applied addictions Counselling (level 7)

    Important notes
  • Addiction qualifications that will qualify you for both provisional and full registration​​​
  • The following bachelors tend NOT to be  applied - Art (psychology), Health or Social Sciences
  • All international qualifications must be assessed  to find out whether they are equivalent to a New Zealand applied bachelor degree and international applicants will be required to undertake cultural competency training in the New Zealand context 
Addiction experience requirements  
  • You need to demonstrate competent addiction practice after completing one of the qualifications.
  • Your manager and dapaanz accredited supervisor will need to confirm you have completed 6 months post qualification of supervised addiction practice (100 hours of client work - minimum 75 hours of direct client work)


Full registration

Qualification requirements  
Addiction experience requirements     
  • You will need to demonstrate competent practice
  • Your manager and dapaanz accredited supervisor will need to confirm that you have completed at least 12 months of supervised provisional addiction practice including 1000 hours in addictions of which 500 hours must be direct client contact work

We also have an endorsement for addictions support workers. While recommended, you do not need a qualification for endorsement as support worker, but you do need to be under the supervision of a dapaanz accredited supervisor.
